Differences between skin nutrition and hydration

As you know, all skin types have different needs. Dehydrated skin needs hydration and suffers from a lack of water. This can affect all skin types, even oily skins. On the other hand, dry skin needs fat. Not all skins need nutrition, but they all need hydration on a daily basis 

How to recognize dehydrated and dry skin ? 

A dehydrated skin presents :

- sensations of occasional tightness (after make-up removal, after showering)

- redness

- dry lines at the corners of the eyes

A dry skin presents :

- sensations of continuous tightness

- irritations

- a dull appearance

- areas of dryness and desquamation (peeling skin)

Which cosmetic ingredients should be used for dehydrated or dry skin ? 

Before only focusing on the composition of your creams, first of all, the skin must be moisturized from the inside. Thus, it is important to drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day, have a balanced diet and eat water-rich fruits and vegetables. 

A dehydrated skin does not retain enough water and will need water, moisturizing of humectant active ingredients, such as glycerin, aloe vera or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients allow to capture water and retain it within the skin. 

It will allow the skin to maintain a daily dose of hydration and to face external aggressions (wind, cold, pollution, UV) that damage the barrier function of the epidermis as the days go by. 

The lack of nutrition is a lack of lipids, of fat. Dry skin does not produce enough sebum to maintain its barrier function. This is why it will need emollient agents such as oils and vegetable butter to nourish and reconstitute the skin’s hydrolipidic barrier. Lipids help to keep skin cells sticking together and therefore help the skin to retain water. 

Contrary to what one might think, oil does not hydrate ! It constitutes a protective barrier on the skin to prevent dehydration. 

In short, nourishing and moisturizing your skin ensures its good health. This results in more radiant beautiful skin. Hydration and nutrition fight against premature aging and the appearance of wrinkles. The most important is to know how to choose and adapt a solution according to the type of skin you have.
